Garment manufacture lies at the end of the textiles production chain. Here, the individual items of clothing are tailored to the desired size. The accuracy of the cut, reproducibility and high productivity are the key factors in this process. They determine the quality and the cost of the end product.

Starting with a stack of crease-free cloth runs, special software programs are used to define the necessary cuts to minimize material rejects. Then, the cutter is guided across a coordinate table to produce the desired parts. The guidance of the cutter, the special cutting processes at corners and rounded edges and allowance for cutter wear are the machine parameters that determine the quality.

Open and closed-loop control of the cutter therefore plays a key role. The FM 357-2 function module was selected from the SIMATIC S7-300 range for this purpose.

The SIMATIC S7 control system includes modules for the control of machines and their auxiliaries such as holding-down devices for control and actuation of the belt feed.

The OP27 operator panel allows centralized communication with the machine operator for:

• Machine operation
• Display of status messages and diagnostics
• Management and calling of part programs
• Definition and modification of cutting parameters.

Dynamic SIMODRIVE servo drives have been selected for driving the cutter slide and rotating the cutter. The SIMOVERT MICROMASTER frequency converter, which powers an asynchronous motor, meets the needs of the belt feeder.
