Tasks

Roll feeds with dedicated electric drives transport sheet metal in the form of a strip with clocked precision to the metal forming plant, which generally is a press or punching machine. The sheet metal is positioned using frictional pressure, the metal surface must not be damaged by slipping rolls. This requires special positioning algorithms. The feed lenghts must be scanned in a time-optimized fashion according to program, because the production stroke number of the press/punching machine directly depends on the positioning time.

Solution versions

With the SIMODRIVE MCU 172A system component as a high-performance compact solution and the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC in two different versions, three high-quality roll feed controllers are available allowing optimum adaptation to each application. On the one hand, SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC enables an all-in-one device to be realized as an autonomous component within a press automation solution. On the other hand, the modular design is particularly suitable for realizing a universal multi-axis solution with roll feeding as part of an integrated automation solution with further axes.

  • SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC as a simple, all-in-one device
    The Kompakt Plus model of SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC combines incoming supply, inverter and positioning controller in a single device. Also integrated is a BiCo (BinaryConnector) device which allows simple circuitry for the roll feed signals, thereby in many cases replacing a dedicated PLC. A simple OP7 operating component ensures data exchange with the operator via a PROFIBUS interface. The connection to the press cam occurs via the universal, standardized and fast SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC input ports. This enables roll feeding functions to be accommodated in a single unit, which makes the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC an ideal all-in-one roll feeding device.
  • SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC as universal multi-axis solution
    The advantages of the modular design of the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC devices make them ideal for integrating several drives into a comprehensive automation solution. With the system-wide SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC drive concept, different system axes can be individually connected via PROFIBUS. Roll feed is one of the drive options within a press automation system. Needless to say that here too, the proven BiCo technology can be used for executing decentralized functions within the drive. The roll feed operation is realized using a higher-level operating unit, which also serves as an interface to other system components.
  • SIMODRIVE 611 MCU 172A - The high-performance compact solution
    The MCU 172A 1-axis roll feed controller from the SIMODRIVE 611 drive family is a highly integrated multi-processor system. Apart from positioning functionality, it contains the hardware of a fully-fledged SIMATIC S7-CPU, as well as the drive control for the servo drive of the high-performance 1FT6 range or the compact 1FK6 range.

    SIMODRIVE 611 MCU 172A is particularly suited for tasks requiring PLC functionality in addition to single-axis positioning. The compact design of this solution is a result of the combination of drive and I/O components and the integration of a PLC. This results in space and cost advantages in terms of design and circuitry.

Special control algorithms and drive characteristics deal with the special functions which are indispensable for roll feeding.

Relative positioning in the incremental dimension enables the material to be fed with clocked precision.
Special positioning algorithms prevent slipping and scratching of the belt. At the same time they ensure maximum production strokes and productivity through time optimization. Additional functions such as roll ventilation or switching to a second metering wheel round off the electric roll feed. Special monitoring of slippage or of the control loops increase availability. Online measurements of critical parameters such as the relative positioning cycle create the conditions for maximum output.
